Top 10 Things Exhausted Chefs Say

I held a chef in my arms while he cried over the death of a family member. His boss told him he could not take time off to attend the funeral.

So, he QUIT.

And today chef Johnny is a successful personal chef living in Nevada.

There comes a time when a chef can take no more.

For 20 years chefs have knocked on my door, literally, to ask for help with their business. From late-night brainstorming sessions to budget and financial planning to breaking the clock-in/clock-out restaurant grind, I am committed to seeing your private chef dreams become a reality.

In his book E-Myth, Michael E. Gerber describes an “entrepreneurial seizure” or a mental snap just before walking out the door. That moment when you realize you no longer want to contribute to someone else’s dream but, instead, begin building your own – your private chef business. It’s the moment of realization you’re doing for someone else what you could be doing for yourself. Duh, right?

Here’s what chefs say at the end.

For your benefit, amusement or commiseration here are ten refrains I hear from chefs who want to start their own private chef business. How many times have you uttered one of these under your breath? Be honest – then call me for help!

The Top 10 List of Things Exhausted Chefs Say Before Quitting Their J.O.B.

  1. I hate my job but can’t give up a steady paycheck.
  2. I can’t believe what goes on in the back of a restaurant – it’s not a place for me.
  3. I want to start my own business before I die.
  4. I can’t believe I’m building my boss’s dream instead of my own.
  5. I want to run my own business, but I don’t know where to start.
  6. I can’t do this for the rest of my life.
  7. My spouse and my kids deserve more from me than this job allows me to give.
  8. I want out, but I don’t know how to do anything else but cook.
  9. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.
  10. I would never tell my kids to go into this profession.

Chef, what would you add to this list?

If you’ve uttered two or more of these quotes it’s time to ask yourself, what is holding you back from pursuing your culinary dream?

The power of fear is amazing!

For those of you afraid to answer, my guess is fear. Fear that your spouse won’t support you or fear you won’t be able to support yourself or your family. Fear that you’ll fail or fear that you’re not good enough.

I call BULLSHIT. Remember that the extent to which you feel fear is in exact proportion to how big your dream is! Realize your dream of creating a private chef business. I will be there every step of the way.

Complaining won’t change your life. Action will.

There are so many clever, but deeply painful expressions that come from chefs in jobs where they are overworked and underpaid. And too often we use humor to mask tragedy. But you don’t have to live it any longer. If you still have one foot on the line and one foot out the door, it’s probably time you stopped complaining and started calling your own shots.
